Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians who serve populations of underserved women with HIV who are at elevated risk of SAVA.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Describe the prevalence of and effect of SUD, depression, and violence on the course of HIV in women, including the negative impact on adherence to treatment. 
  • Develop a plan to screen for SUDs, depression, and violence and to refer for those who screen positive.
  • Address specific risks and challenges of this syndemic in specific populations of women, including pregnant women, immigrants, and minority women.

Dr. Anderson is Professor Emerita of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Anderson has spent much of her career caring for women living with HIV and in developing innovative care models. She founded and continues to direct the Johns Hopkins HIV Women’s Health Program since 1988, with provision of care to over 8000 women. She has served on the USPHS Perinatal HIV Guidelines Panel since its inception in 1999 and the USPHS/CDC Task Force on Prevention and Management of Opportunistic Infections. She is currently co-chair of the CDC/HRSA Advisory Committee of HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases and is a member of the HIV Expert Work Group for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a senior technical advisor with Jhpiego and the director of the Johns Hopkins Global Women’s Health Fellowship and has worked in numerous countries in sub-Saharan Africa, India, Latin America and the Caribbean focusing on HIV and prevention of cervical cancer.

Alison Livingston has spent the past 20 years specializing in the nursing care of PLWHIV. Her current role as nurse manager of the Johns Hopkins HIV Women’s Health Program involves collaborative leadership and implementation of clinical and social aspects of a program that addresses health outcomes for vulnerable populations living with HIV. This includes pre-natal and postpartum care to women living with HIV/AIDS with the goals of decreasing risk for maternal-child transmission, increasing visit and medication adherence, and enhancement of patient relationship with health care system with a focus on 4th trimester linkage and retention in care; development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives to address the syndemic of substance use, intimate partner violence, and depression of women living with HIV/AIDS ; initiatives to increase screening and treatment for cervical cancer and sexually transmitted infections in women living with HIV/AIDS. Her nursing roles have included development, operationalization and implementation of programs, training of staff in best practice, management of clinical trials, and direct clinical care and supervision of complex patients in ambulatory, inpatient, correctional and community settings.

Lauren Rineer, MSW, LSW, CCTP

Lauren Rineer is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania. For over 10 years, she has been a champion for helping clients with their mental health and trauma healing. She has worked in outpatient behavioral health, long term care and acute care. She is passionate about empowering individuals with chronic conditions live their best life while healing from trauma. She is a certified competent trauma professional through Lakeside Global and trained in Rational Living Therapy.
Lauren resides in central Pennsylvania, with her wife who is also a social worker and her golden retriever, Rowan.
